About Carbon Credits
One carbon credit is worth 10kg of carbon emissions. As a member of the CarbonDAQ-wide market which you are automatically enrolled to when you register, your target will be five tonnes a year, so you'll receive 500 carbon credits, which is 42 credits each month. To give you an idea of what this means in real terms, if you take a flight to Edinburgh and back, which emits 680kg carbon, you’d have to use up 68 credits – that’s already more than one months worth of allowance.
You can also set up your own group in CarbonDAQ and you get to decide your target. You also get to choose what the incentive is. By default, CarbonDAQ uses virtual pounds, but you could substitute this for other incentives, such as raffle tickets or shares in some prizes. If your carbon emissions are higher than the group target, then you will need to buy carbon credits, exchanging them, for example, for raffle tickets. If your emissions are lower than the carbon credit allowance, you can sell unused credits to gain raffle tickets. The number of raffle tickets you can get for your carbon credits will depend on the amount others are prepared to pay.
